Teshie-Accra, Ghana — Pastor Mensa Otabil has urged Christians to re-examine the biblical focus of prayer, challenging believers to prioritize God’s greatness over an excessive emphasis on praying against the devil.
Speaking after Bishop Mike Okonkwo’s sermon during the Day 3 Morning Session of the Greater Works Conference 2026 at ICGC Christ Temple East, Teshie-Accra, Pastor Otabil shared a spontaneous reflection that he said emerged while listening to the message.
He observed that as he mentally reviewed Scripture, he could “rarely” recall prayers directed against the devil in either the Old or New Testament. Instead, he noted that biblical prayers consistently magnify God, affirm His promises, and express confidence in His power.
Pastor Otabil suggested that Christians should examine the origins of teachings that place heavy emphasis on praying against the devil, encouraging believers to ensure that their prayer practices are rooted in Scripture. He stressed that “the focus of prayer is God,” adding that faith and confidence should remain centred on God’s character, Word, grace, and goodness.
He further encouraged believers to trust God’s sovereignty rather than attempting to direct Him on which battles to fight. According to him, God already knows the problems His people face and is fully capable of fighting on their behalf as they honour Him, praise Him, and stand firmly on His Word.
Pastor Otabil noted that his remarks were preliminary reflections and promised a more comprehensive biblical study on the subject in the future.
